What a clicker is? The clicker is an inhuman mechanical device that replaces your voice and praise. You can go on using praise all you want; just click first. The "click" sound thus identifies for the dog exactly what all your affection is in honor of. You might say that the voice is analogue - like a picture, it carries a lot of information, including your mood, your energy level and so on - whereas the "click" is digital - it means one thing only YES. Dogs learn in an instant that they can make YOU "click", and how to do it again. It's clear communication that rapidly leads to a stronger bond between you and your pup, one of the many delightful side effects of this kind of training.
WHAT THE CLICKER ISN'T
- ~ The clicker is not a permanent necessity;
- ~ You do not have to use a clicker in public or on the show grounds;
- ~ The click is not a way to call your dog and make him come;
- ~ The clicker is not a threat or a warning of punishment;
- ~ The click is not just for puppies, or for pet, or for tricks;
- ~ Clicker training is not a fad or the invention or method of some particular guru;
- ~ Clicker training is not obsecure or hard to learn - it's just different;
In May, 2005, I attended the 'Click to Calm' seminar given by Emma Parsons. This seminar had some good tidbits on 'healing the aggressive dog'. Remember, 'aggressive' and 'reactive' - new termonology - means the same thing.
I am in the process of doing case studies. This means I will pick an owner/dog team and follow through to the end result. Since May, 2005, I have taken on five new clients as case studies. This is a very interesting concept.
